Tapahtumien kuvaus: Police Constable Henttinen and Detective Mannermaa were in the village of Jalkala in Kivennapa at the Soviet border, where they were conducting intensified border surveillance. After 10 pm, when it was already dark, they encountered a man and a woman walking on the road. The documents they were carrying and their explanation for walking there at night made the policemen suspicious. The man suddenly drew a weapon and fired four shots at the policemen, one of which hit Henttinen. Mannermaa took out his pistol and returned fire, but the two managed to disappear into the darkness. It was later revealed that they were Finnish citizens who were secret communist operatives.
