Tapahtumien kuvaus: On May Eve, the three policemen Taavetti Tapaninen, Martti Koskinen and Oskari Karhunen went to monitor a party held at the community centre in the village of Kerkonjoensuu in Rautalampi. At the party, they seized a bottle of alcohol from a labourer named Matti Karhu. A few hours later, after midnight, the policemen returned to the party and encountered Karhu. Karhu was intoxicated and started talking about his bottle. Tapaninen told him to leave and took him to the road twice. Karhu suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed Tapaninen. When Karhu tried to run away, Koskinen shot him in the leg. Both Karhu and Tapaninen were taken to the hospital in Rautalampi. Tapaninen’s life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead. Karhu’s bullet wound was taken care of at the hospital, and afterwards he was sent to the provincial prison in Kuopio to await his trial. Tapaninen had been a police officer since 1919, first at the Kuopio Police Department and in the detective division since early 1926.
