Tapahtumien kuvaus: On 27.2.1944, Lauri Salonkoski was guarding the detention centre of the State Police. One of those in custody was the German Corporal Karl Otto Schnee, a deserter. Schnee asked for permission to use the toilet, and when Salonkoski opened the door, Schnee suddenly attacked him and beat him down. Schnee took Salonkoski’s keys and pistol, after which he locked Salonkoski into the toilet. When Schnee was going to flee, the key broke when he turned it in the lock. Unable to get out, Schnee committed suicide. The officer on call tried to reach the detention centre by telephone, and when nobody answered the phone, officers went there to investigate. They found that Schnee was dead. Upon hearing knocking sounds from the toilet upstairs, they opened the door and discovered the wounded Salonkoski. Salonkoski was taken to the Red Cross Hospital, where he died two days later. Salonkoski had been a police officer since 1913 and had served in the State Police since 1926.
