Tapahtumien kuvaus: On 12.12.1944, burglars broke into a butcher’s shop on Tehtaankatu 38 during the night, stealing meat products and ration coupons. The burglars were Sakari Meriö, who had escaped from the Pitkäniemi Mental Hospital, and Antti Olavi Ihalainen. Constable Riistama spotted them at Pursimiehenkatu 9 and suspected that they were the ones who had broken into the shop. He ordered them to stop and fired shots into the air when they did not. Meriö fired two shots at Riistama, wounding him. Meriö and Ihalainen ran away, leaving Riistama lying on the street. Other police officers were called to the scene, and they found that Riistama had died. Meriö was arrested in Lahti on December 13th for carrying an unlicensed firearm, and Ihalainen was arrested in the same city ten days later after Meriö had revealed his whereabouts. Riistama had been a police officer since 1.5.1930.
