Tapahtumien kuvaus: A unit from the National Traffic Police was enforcing speed limits on Jäämerentie in Rovaniemi. The speed limit on the road was 50 km/h, but the speed radar warned that a car was approaching at 106 km/h. When the driver spotted the police who intended to stop it, he turned onto a side street and stopped in the yard of a building. The driver stepped out of the car but immediately entered it again and drove away at high speed. The ensuing chase led through police roadblocks, the speed at times exceeding 150 km/h. A unit from the detective police was in the Rovaniemi city centre in an unmarked Lada when hearing about the chase over the police radio. The detectives parked the Lada sideways over the street and were about to place a warning light on the roof when the chased car suddenly approached them at high speed. The policemen tried to leap out of the way. One of them, Sergeant Peuraniemi, happened to leap to the same side as the driver turned when trying to get past the police car. Peuraniemi was run over and died instantly. The driver, a serviceman from Kittilä named Kimmo Kumpula, was arrested at the scene.
