Tapahtumien kuvaus: On Sunday, 6.2.1938 at 3:30 pm, Junior Constable Gunnar Hjortman entered a residential building at the corner of Hämeenpuisto and Puuvillatehtaankatu. He visited several flats, looking for someone who was not there and behaving in a strange way. The residents contacted the police, and Sergeant Vartia was sent there to investigate. Vartia spotted Hjortman in stairwell C on the third floor. According to an eyewitness, Vartia calmly asked Hjortman what he was doing. Hjortman suddenly pushed Vartia and ran to stairwell A. Vartia saw that Hjortman had fled to the uppermost floor, so he took the lift up. While Vartia was standing in the lift, Hjortman took aim and shot him to death. More police officers were called to the scene, and Vartia was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Hjortman was arrested but did not utter a word during interrogation. Hjortman was admitted to the Pitkäniemi Psychiatric Hospital. Vartia had been a police officer since 1928.
