Tapahtumien kuvaus: After 1 pm on Friday, February 5th 1993, a bank robbery took place in Lauttasaari, Helsinki. Several police units were sent to look for the robber, among them Constables Esa Elenius and Antti Murtomäki from the dog police. Meanwhile, a 22-year-old offender had been released. He had previously stolen a car in Kerava and hidden it in Lauttasaari, and when he was released, he went there to pick it up. A local resident noticed him and called the police. The unit that went looking for the car thief spotted him and tried to stop him, but he ignored the police and accelerated, driving along Lauttasaarentie in the direction of Gyldénintie to get away from them. While trying to evade capture, the thief collided with a car that he was overtaking. With the police in pursuit, he turned onto Gyldénintie. Elenius and Murtomäki were in the vicinity, listening to the police radio. At this point, it could not be ruled out that the car thief was the bank robber. The policemen stopped their Volvo at the end of a street, and Murtomäki got out in order to signal to the fleeing driver to stop. The car approached at high speed in the right lane, but it suddenly switched to the left lane only about twenty metres from the police car. Murtomäki was standing on that side, and he could not get out of the way in time. The car ran over him, and the driver continued his escape without stopping. Since he was still driving in the wrong lane, he almost caused another collision. The chase ended when the thief collided with two traffic signs, damaging the tyres and rims on the left side. However, the driver did not surrender, but tried to get away on foot. A police unit managed to catch him soon. Murtomäki, who had been seriously wounded, was taken to Töölö Hospital, where he died on February 14th.
