Tapahtumien kuvaus: Jaakko Leistiö, caretaker at the Civil Guard headquarters in Vaajakoski, had for some time suffered from a mental disorder. Police Constables Jouhimäki and Mäkinen brought him to Jyväskylä to be evaluated by the city physician. The physician decided that Leistiö was to be sent to a mental hospital in Helsinki. On the way back from Jyväskylä, on 4.2.1939 at about 5:20 pm, Leistiö suddenly jumped out of the bus they were travelling with. He ran 300 metres to Vartiolinna, where his home was. Mäkinen pursued Leistiö who, upon reaching his home, took out a military rifle and fired four shots at Mäkinen. Mäkinen died instantly. Leistiö initially fled but reported his whereabouts to the police the following morning, whereupon he was apprehended.
