Tapahtumien kuvaus: On 4.11.1981 at 2:45 pm, Ilkka Tapani Liettyä robbed the Virrat Cooperative Bank in Vaskivesi, threatening the staff with a firearm. Having obtained some money, the robber left on foot. A clerk immediately called the local police. Since it was not known in which direction the robber had gone, police units from nearby Ruovesi, Ylöjärvi, Mänttä and Parkano as well at the National Traffic Police were deployed. Two police dogs participated in the search. Based on a tip from the public, Sergeant Rajamäki of the Ruovesi Sheriff’s District went alone into the wilderness between Vaskivesi and Ruovesi to follow a set of footprints in the snow. The suspect was arrested on the road between Ruovesi and Vaskivesi three hours later, only two kilometres from the bank. The man was carrying a small-calibre revolver, and when he was arrested, he revealed that he had fired numerous shots at a police officer who had pursued him. This had been Sergeant Rajamäki, whose body was found in the wilderness. He had been hit by several bullets, some of which had been fired at close range.
