Tapahtumien kuvaus: On 24.9.1958 at 4:20 am, the police in Hyvinkää were informed that someone had broken into a small convenience store near the railway station. Constables Esko Hännikäinen and Ilkka Tuominen, who were on call that night, went to investigate. Once there, they saw that the burglar had entered the convenience store through a small window on the backside. The constables investigated and secured the crime scene, and since the burglar had left, they returned to the police station. Hännikäinen stayed at the police station on call while Tuominen returned to the crime scene to investigate further. While searching the surrounding area, he discovered a man in a gravel pit 300 metres from the convenience store. The man had in his possession goods stolen from the convenience store. Tuominen took the burglar to the police car, but as Tuominen was pushing him the inside through the rear door, the burglar kicked Tuominen and ran off. Tuominen caught up with him after 100 metres. A struggle ensued, and the burglar stabbed Tuominen with a bread knife that he had been carrying. A railway employee named Hugo Ruotsalainen was on his way to work and witnessed how the policeman was stabbed and fell to the ground. Ruotsalainen tried to catch the perpetrator but lost him, so he called the police instead. Constable Hännikäinen arrived at the scene and immediately took Tuominen to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A large-scale manhunt was initiated, but the killer was not found nearby. However, he was caught by Sergeant Lauri Salminen in Lahti two days later.
