Tapahtumien kuvaus: Three officers of the patrol police of Varkaus were sent to a home where a 28-year-old man was acting violently. The man had been a patient at a mental hospital but had recently been discharged to outpatient care. The man’s father had fled into the bathroom and his mother had rushed to the neighbour to call the police. The policemen asked the mother whether her son could possibly be armed, but she was unaware that he had knives in his possession. The policemen entered the stairway, and when they opened the door to the flat, the man ran out with two knives. He stabbed Eronen several times after which he stabbed one of the other officers as well. The man managed to leave the building and flee out on the town, where he attempted to set a petrol station on fire.
