Tapahtumien kuvaus: On Saturday 30.6.2007 at 10:30 pm, the police in Kalajoki attempted to stop a BMW passenger car whose driver was thought to be intoxicated. The young driver did not stop when signalled to do so, and the police began to pursue the fleeing vehicle. The driver continued southbound on National Road 8 towards Kokkola at a speed well above the speed limit. The driver jeopardised road safety by aggressively passing other vehicles on the heavily trafficked road. The police in Kalajoki called the police in Kokkola for assistance. The latter set up at roadblock at Kälviä at the intersection of National Road 8 and Road 28 towards Kajaani. When the car chase had been going on for about half an hour, the car was approaching the roadblock, and the police were in the process of placing a spike strip over the road to force it to stop. The car was pursued by a police car and a motorcycle officer, and two patrol cars and a motorcycle were waiting at the intersection. Visibility on the road was good, and the driver could not avoid seeing the roadblock. Senior Constable Gudmund Lindström from the police in Kokkola was placing the spike strip over the road. The driver of the speeding car ignored the police who signalled him to stop. Continuing at undiminished speed, he switched to the lane for oncoming traffic and ran over Lindström, killing him instantly. After running over Lindström, the BMW drove into the ditch. Of the three men in the car, who were about 20 years of age, two flew out of the car when it crashed. All three men received minor injuries. The driver, who had modified the engine of his BMW 316, had three per mille of alcohol in his blood according to the police breathalyser.
