Tapahtumien kuvaus: On 11.8.1939 at about 10 pm, Vilho Romunen shot his 75-year-old father in the latter’s home. Romunen’s mother and brother fled into the forest. At 4:30 am, they reached their neighbour’s house, from where they called the police. Sergeant Jussi Juutilainen and Senior Constable Jalmari Manninen were sent to arrest the shooter. Before the police arrived, Romunen’s neighbour Eino Laitinen crossed Romunen’s yard, whereupon Romunen began shooting at him with a small-calibre rifle. Although Laitinen was hit, he managed to reach the closest house, which was 2.5 km away. The police arrived there, and Laitinen was sent to the hospital in Pieksämäki for treatment. When the police were about ten metres from Romunen’s front gate, Romunen began shooting at Manninen, who was walking ahead of Juutilainen. Manninen died instantly. Juutilainen managed to take cover and called the Civil Guard for assistance. A two-hour siege ensued. Many shots were fired from both sides, and tear gas was used in an attempt to force Romunen out of the house. However, Romunen went down into the potato cellar, where he shot himself.
