Constable Jalmari Soisalo had been informed that some of the goods Joutsenjärvi was selling were illegal, so he decided to find the peddler. After having followed him for a few kilometres, Soisalo caught up with him and demanded to see his goods. Joutsenjärvi though that Constable Soisalo, who was wearing civilian clothes and holding a pistol, was a robber. Instead of letting Soisalo see his goods, Joutsenjärvi tried to run away. Soisalo caught him, and during the ensuing struggle, a Mauser pistol that Joutsenjärvi was carrying went off three or four times.
