Tapahtumien kuvaus: Infamous hooligans Johan Edvard Saarinen and Otto Evert Ketola were disturbing the peace in their hometown Lamminkylä in Northern Pirkkala. On May 12th, Police Constable Vihtori Maakala had come to Saarinen’s home and seized his Mauser pistol. This annoyed the two men. A man in the village whom they were threatening fled to Maakala’s house, and the hooligans followed him inside. Maakala tried to make them leave, but one of them hit him. Maakala took his service pistol from a desk drawer and tried to shoot one of the intruders, but he was bleeding and could not see properly. The pistol jammed, and one of the intruders took the opportunity to try to strike Maakala with an axe. Maakala’s wife Eeva intervened and managed to stop him from doing so. Maakala decided to run away, thinking that the intruders would pursue him and thereby leave his family alone. Despite his wounds, Maakala managed to reach the police station at Epilä, which was two kilometres away, on foot. There, Sergeant Anton Lundqvist ordered a car with a driver and set off for Lamminkylä together with three constables. When the police reached Maakala’s home, they found to their horror that the hooligans had killed Eeva Maakala. The couple’s two-year-old daughter was crying beside her mother’s corpse, and the house had been badly vandalised. The perpetrators were waiting nearby, and between the murder of Eeva Maakala and the arrival of the police, they had obtained another firearm. The two men spotted the car that the police had arrived in parked in front of the Voima store in Lamminkylä. They approached the car and threatened the driver, who tried to stall them. The policemen had entered the store to call the police station in Nokia for backup, and when they came out, the hooligans started shooting at them. During the firefight, one of the hooligans was shot in the leg, and Sergeant Lundqvist was hit in the abdomen. Lundqvist was taken to Tampere General Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds on 13.5.1931. Lundqvist had been a police officer since 1920.
